Rivo Alto Island House

Inside, the house is held to white walls and pale bamboo floors, with tall steel windows to the garden. A dark leather sectional and a white tufted chaise face each other over a cowhide; two faceted white tables and a steel arc lamp are the only furniture that draws a line. A pair of grey canvases of a woman's eyes hangs above the sofa, and a second painted face watches the bedroom from across the bed.

Colour arrives in short bursts and then stops: red moulded armchairs at a marble table, an orange cabinet, a red light box over the aqua glass basin, a blue vessel on a chrome stem, a wall of dotted blue glass behind a suede headboard. One wall is laid in a white relief tile that folds the light; an agave in a black planter is all it needs. Outside the whole palette resolves into one long lap pool tiled in cobalt, with plaster piers, water jets and moulded white chairs standing in the shallows.
