A city apartment run on furniture rather than architecture.
The rooms are small and plainly built, so the work is done by what stands in them. Walls are glazed a warm parchment, the floors are honey oak, and the one piece of real architecture, a white mantel with a fire kept lit, is given a carved gilt mirror and a pair of brass sconces so it reads as the head of the room. Seating is velvet in a soft mushroom, low and long; the tables are mahogany, inlaid and slender enough to move.
Blue is the thread. A large abstract in blue and rust hangs over the sofa and sets the terms, and after that the colour arrives in small carried things: a Chinese fretwork screen, an Imari charger on the dining table, a blue and white lamp on the writing desk, a stoneware vase of market flowers. The bedroom is the one room allowed a different ground, strié yellow, where a blue still life over the bed keeps it in the same conversation.
The dining corner, annotated
Three butterfly plates in gilt, hung close and low, standing in for a picture the wall is too narrow to take
The sideboard kept as a bar, decanters left on the tray where they are used
