A small house that is not trying to look larger, only fuller.

Pattern runs from the floor up. A hooked carpet of cabbage roses, a rose chintz sofa with a bullion skirt, green damask armchairs, gingham, check and toile cushions stacked three deep, and pink striped curtains under fringed valances at every window. The walls stay a plain warm buff so all of it can happen at once. A white mantel, a carved gilt mirror, a green pagoda cabinet in the corner and a low oak table that holds tulips, books and a lit fire behind them.

The other rooms are the same argument in different keys. A sun porch of natural wicker with red check cushions, a red painted table, a birdcage, shells under glass, ferns and orchids against three tall windows. A kitchen with a pine dresser stacked with green majolica and pottery roosters, striped paper, a rooster valance and gingham shades on a black chandelier. Upstairs, full rose wallpaper carried over the arched dormers, a red painted bench heaped with toile and gingham, and a red and white quilt on the bed.

Cottage living room with a lit fire under a white mantel and carved gilt mirror, a rose chintz sofa with a bullion skirt, green damask armchairs, a gingham skirted slipper chair and pink striped curtains at three windows
The living room, with the fire lit. Plain buff walls are the only quiet surface in the room, and they are what let the rest of it sit together.
Sun porch with two natural wicker armchairs in red check cushions, a red painted wicker side table, a domed birdcage, a glass jar of shells, ferns and orchids at three tall windows
The sun porch. Wicker left natural, one table painted red, and the plants treated as furniture rather than decoration.
Kitchen dresser in pine stacked with green majolica, pottery roosters above, a scrubbed table laid with a red hurricane candle and painted china, black chairs and a rooster print valance at the window
The kitchen dresser, carrying the majolica. Striped paper behind it, gingham shades on the chandelier, and the table laid for the everyday.
Bedroom corner papered in full scale roses, a red painted bench piled with toile and gingham cushions between two arched dormer windows, a jug and violets on an inlaid side table and a red and white quilt on the bed
The bedroom, papered over the arched dormers so the roses meet in the corners. The bench is old red paint, left as found.
