The house was already right. The job was what goes in it.
Nothing was done to the shell beyond keeping it: the carved plaster mantels, the deep mouldings and coffered ceilings, the tall windows and their interior shutters, walls glazed a pale straw. Curtains are plain cream to the floor in the parlour and loose balloon shades in tan cotton at the bay, which is as much window treatment as rooms of this height need.
Inside that, four countries sit together. English mahogany, a glazed cabinet and a Victorian wardrobe of drawers; Chinese fretwork doors, a black lacquer chest, a red garden seat set in an unused firebox; an Anglo-Indian oak trestle table, a leather bull as a footstool, blue trellis and paisley on an English armchair. Colour comes up from the carpets, red Oushak in the parlour and pale green in the front room, and the only modern notes are the pictures: a dry stone wall photographed close, a yellow canvas studded with dark discs, a spiral drawn in graphite.

One modern picture over a carved plaster mantel, and a gilded leopard under it to take the formality out
