An English country house that has been collecting from the East for a century.
The rooms are built on three colours held at full strength: red velvet, indigo, and the madder ground of the carpets. Everything else is brown furniture and candlelight. Framed bird paintings in black and gold hang above the sofa, a Chinese vase is wired as a lamp, embroidered and paisley cushions pile up without matching, and a pair of barley twist candlesticks stands on a tray table.
Nothing here is precious. The blue slipcovered sofa takes a tartan throw and a bowl of cricket balls; a leather club chair sits beside a brass bouillotte lamp, a glass of claret and a strapped case; the kitchen keeps an old scrubbed table, Windsor chairs and a bench cushioned in a small blue print, with the garden filling the window behind.
